Illegal mining: Deputy Commissioner forms teams to carry out surprise checks

AFTER THE issue of illegal mining in Majri block was highlighted by Chandigarh Newsline, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Gurpreet Kaur Sapra constituted teams with officials of different departments to carry out surprise checks in the affected areas. The officers would hand over the reports to the DC immediately after the raid.

The DC also directed the officials to conduct surprise checks at night as illegal mining is usually done around that time. The DC has also directed officials to take illegal miners to task. She has also directed the officials to conduct surprise checks at least twice a month.

The development came after people of Majri block in Kharar subdivision, one of the worst-affected areas of the district, complained that the officials were not listening to them and despite their complaints, illegal mining was going on unabated in Khijrabaad, Mianpur, Jhangar and some other villages in the area.

According to the DC’s directions, PWD Executive Engineer Arshdeep Singh and Baljinder Singh, Block Level Extension Officer (BLEO) Baljinder Singh will carry out checks on October 1, 15 and 29. SDO (Water Supply), Patiala, Harmel Singh, along with Derabassi BLEO Baljeet Singh will conduct checks on October 2, 16, 30. Similarly, officials of various departments have been deputed to carry on checking on different days.

Five teams have been formed for the task. The teams will carry out checks in Kharar and Derabassi subdivisions, the areas most affected by illegal mining in the district.

The officials said the teams were formed after residents of some villages in Majri block claimed that even after the DC’s visit, illegal mining continued unabated.
