If one person in the country deserves Bharat Ratna the most,he is Sachin Tendlukar was what Harbhjan Singh, the spin-spearhead of the World Cup winning Team India said during his first-ever interaction with the media after reaching home in Jalandhar.
Sachin deserves much more than what he has got. He has been part of the Indian cricket team for 21 years now, having participated in six World Cups, said Bhajji. Incidentally,on Tuesday, the Maharashtra government recommended the name of the Master Blaster for Bharat Ratna Indias highest civilian award. Sachin was nominated for the coveted award last year as well.
Bhajji also spoke very high about coach Gary Kirsten and captain M S Dhoni. We were just players when Gary joined us but he made us world champions, he said, adding that he wished that Gary joins them after two years. Dhoni is not only a great captain but his decisions on the ground saw us through this journey, said Bhajji.
When asked why he cried after winning the cup,Bhajji said: Those moments cannot be described in words. I was crying, enjoying, dancing and what not. It was all because we had won the World Cup. It was a dream come true I had seen photographs of Kapil Dev holding the World Cup and had always dreamt to win the same since my childhood.
Bhajji turned nostalgic while recalling his late father Sardev Singh,to whom he dedicated his success. It was due to his dedication and commitment that I am here today, said Bhajji. He recalled that once while he was on his way to the National Cricket Academy,at the railway station he found that he had forgotten something. My father rushed back home. I saw him running towards me at the Jalandhar station with a broken chappal in his hand, he said.
He also plans to visit his old locality in Jalandhar to meet those with whom he has spent his childhood.
When asked about his plans for marriage,Harbhajan said: My responsibility was to win the World Cup but my marriage is my familys responsibility. However,he was quick to add that by the next World Cup,he would not only be married but also have children.
He also urged the Punjab government to provide him land to set up a sports academy, where he would arrange great players to provide guidance to the budding sportspersons not only in cricket but in other sports as well. For tennis,I can request Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupati and for hockey,Pargat Singh can be approached, he added.
