The Haryana Urban Development Authority office in Sector 6,Panchkula,has been functioning with less than the sanctioned number of staff, and the deputed officers are working extra hours to compensate for the shortage.
Since its inception in 1977,the HUDA office has been sanctioned six assistants, four peons and four clerks. Though the sectors in Panchkula have increased from six to more than thirty since then, the number of assistants and clerks assigned to handle the increased amount of work has remained the same. On the contrary, three of the six sanctioned positions for assistants have been lying vacant for more than a year.
The assistants share of work is often managed by clerks and peons who are not officially qualified for the job. The assistants also, sometimes, have to work on weekends.
According to sources at the HUDA office, the Haryana government has not increased the number of staff or even deputed staff for the vacant positions, even after repeated requests made by HUDA. A written application demanding filling of the three vacant positions was also sent six months back.
The main functions of HUDA include promoting and securing development of urban areas in a systematic and planned way and undertaking building work.
