Himachal Pradesh Governor Urmila Singh on Saturday said she will write to Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal to incorporate NGO’s as a volunteers in the National Literacy Mission.
Addressing a gathering here at Gaiety to mark the 46th International Literacy Day,organized by the State Resource Centre Shimla,Singh also urged the state government to bring the entire state under the Sakshar Bharat Mission in order to cover the left out pockets with low literacy ratio.
Emphasizing the need to educate women,Singh said that government should formulate special programmes. The NGOs can play an active role in promoting education and will help achieve the target of 100 per cent literacy,she added.
“Only an educated society can make progress. Himachal’s literacy rate is 84 per cent,which is much higher than most other states. But there are regions in the state,bound by terrestrial constraints,where literacy rate is very low,” the Governor said.
The Sakshar Bharat Mission was launched in Chamba district this year under which formal education was provided to the people. The programme primarily focuses on the functional literacy,basic education,equality,vocational education and skill development.
