A day after the callous attitude of hospital staff at the Government Multi Specialty Hospital Sector 16 towards a pregnant woman came to light, the hospital authorities have dismissed the on-duty nurse who ignored the pleas of the family members on the night of July 10.
Hospital authorities are, however, silent over why there was no doctor present in the labour room.
Gurkirat, the contractual nurse,a class IV employee and a security guard were the only ones at the ward.
The Director of Health Services,Dr Chander Mohan, said,It is not true that there was no doctor. Sometimes the doctor is busy with some other case. But,an inquiry is being conducted to ascertain the exact sequence of events, he added.
The family of the victim,Laxmi, alleged that there was no doctor present in the ward on Tuesday night. I couldnt find any doctor anywhere. No doctor were there to attend to Laxmi or the other patients. What if a similar tragedy had occurred with another patient? And if there was a doctor why did the nurse not summon him? asked Shailesh Kumar,Laxmi’s husband.
The authorities have washed their hands off the incident by dismissing the nurse. How does this change the fact that there was no doctor in attendance? said another family member.
Laxmi was diagnosed with a dead foetus in her womb. Family members alleged that instead of taking the foetus to the mortuary, the staff kept the dead foetus with Lakshmi for two hours and then in a urine pot under the bed.
The on-duty nurse had refused to come out of her cabin despite repeated requests of the family to attend to Laxmi.
