Two people including a woman were killed on the spot while four suffered serious injuries, when a live shell suddenly exploded at Hoshiarpur’s Bhangi Choe Sunday morning.
Soon after the blast, police and district administrative authorities rushed to the spot.
The deceased has been identified as Mohan Lal (30) and a woman Mano (60). The four others who were injured have been admitted to the Civil Hospital.
According to the police, Mohan Lal used to procure scrap from various places. On Sunday, he was trying to pry copper from the shell when it exploded. The victim may have picked this shell from the area where Army often practices war exercises.
Eyewitnesses said that the blast was so severe that the bodies were blown into pieces.
“Nobody was aware that it was a shell,” said an eyewitness Tari adding that they could not even understand for some time that what had occurred.
Sharing information about the incident, DSP Sameer Verma said that the case has been filed u/s 174 CrPC as the man, himself became the victim and died on the spot.
In another accident, one died while 15 were injured when a mini truck carrying pilgrims rolled down into a several feet deep gorge near Manguwal on Hoshiarpur and Himachal boundary Sunday morning. It is learnt that they were on their way to Ludhiana from Baba Bharbhag Singh, a religious place in Himachal’s Una district.
The deceased has been identified as Deep Singh, a youth in mid 20s from Salem Tabri, Ludhiana.
The injured have been admitted to the civil hospital Hoshiarpur, out of which two who suffered serious injuries were shifted to DMCH, Ludhiana, and two to the Government Medical College and Hospital Sector 32 in Chandigarh, informed ADC(D) Harbir Singh.
