A Holi special train to Varanasi will ply from Chandigarh railway station on March 6 and it will make the return journey to Chandigarh on March 7.
There is a huge rush for train bookings due to the festival,with the waiting list for some destinations running into a few hundred.
The special train (04504/ 04503) will leave Chandigarh railway station at 11.10 pm on March 6 and commence its journey from Varanasi at 6.15 pm on March 7.
With Holi falling on a Thursday,by taking a holiday on Friday people can enjoy a long weekend. Due to this,the rush for bookings has increased.
The demand for train tickets to Lucknow,Allahabad and Howrah in particular has witnessed an increase.
Station Superintendent Praveen Kumar said,The trains to Uttar Pradesh are more in demand during this festival. The combined waiting list for four-five trains is around 1,200. Keeping in view the rush,the Railways have decided to ply a Holi special train.
The city has a substantial population of people from Uttar Pradesh who are settled here. During festivals,there is a surge of people commuting to various destinations in UP. The Railways ply special trains to accommodate this rush.
