In a political twist, the Haryana Janhit Congress named former Congress leader Ravinder Rawal as its candidate for Panchkula constituency on Thursday, shifting former deputy chief minister Chander Mohan to Nalwa in Hisar.
Posters of Chander Mohan, a four-time MLA, had already appeared in the constituency and he had started campaigning a few days ago.
Rawal was hopeful of getting the Congress ticket. After the party chose sitting MLA D K Bansal on Wednesday evening, he crossed over to the HJC which promptly named him as its candidate.
“The HJC was also formed by people from the Congress, and we have always been on good terms. But when HJC leader Kuldeep Bishnoi asked me to contest from Panchkula, I was surprised. I talked to my family members and friends, and took the decision,” said Rawal.
Both Kuldeep Bishnoi and Chander Mohan are sons of former chief minister Bhajan Lal.
Rawal said he had hoped that the Congress would give him the ticket in view of his work in the last 30 years, but they chose the sitting MLA.
“This is unfair to others, the current MLA has not done his complete duty. But I have no complaint, everyone has compulsions, but it is sad when you have to leave your home,” said Rawal.
Bansal refused to comment on Rawal’s action, saying, “Everyone has the freedom to make their choice in life.” Bansal has started his campaign and his audio messages have started coming on the phone.
A former president of the Panchkula Municipal Council, Rawal had contested the 2013 municipal corporation election and lost.
He said he always remained among the common people and understood their problems. “I have been in Panchkula since 1979, and I have seen the city grow. Unlike other candidates, I have always been available to the people,” he added.
