Differences have cropped up between the BJP and Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) over the sharing of seats for the coming elections of the Panchkula Municipal Corporation (PMC).
While the BJP is insisting that it will contest on at least 15 seats out of the 20 seats, the HJC has made it clear that its workers can contest on any number of seats for the Corporation elections. To resolve the differences, both the parties have worked out a co-ordination committee, which is likely to meet after the notification is issued for the Corporation elections by the State Election Commission.
Sources said that the decision of the HJC leadership that the party will not contest on its symbol in the local elections is largely being seen as the signal to the workers that they can even be fielded on the wards on which BJP candidates will contest elections. In fact, sources said that even before the co-ordination committee of the two parties was to meet, the HJC has shown its interest to field the candidates on ward no 13 and 19 wards.
Former Deputy Chief Minister and senior HJC leader,Chander Mohan, said that the party candidates will be free to contest from any of the wards. We have held discussions with the BJP and it has been decided that we will be contesting the elections without a party symbol. Party workers can contest on any of the seats, he said.
However, while Chander Mohan said that since both the BJP and HJC have resolved the issue of contesting on a symbol, with the BJP stating that it will field candidates on the party symbol, sources also foresee that the BJP will be facing stiff competition on some seats from the HJC candidates as well. District president of BJP,Vishal Seth, however spoke about how the two parties have worked out a co-ordination committee to resolve the issue. The committee will meet soon to discuss the issue, he said. Seth added that the prospectus of a candidate to win the elections will be the deciding factor for fielding the candidates. Since BJP is a larger party with a national mass base,we have decided to contest on symbol, he said.
HJC leaders said that the party will be fielding its candidates without using party symbol as the corporation elections are more about basic issues of development than fighting on party ideologies. The party has also specified that it will be fielding its own workers associated with the party for a long time in the corporation elections.
