On the ‘Statehood Day’ function,marking Himachal Pradesh’s 40 years of existence,Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal announced the release of 10 per cent Dearness Allowance for government employees and pensioners.

On the ‘Statehood Day’ function on Tuesday,marking Himachal Pradesh’s 40 years of existence,Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal announced the release of 10 per cent Dearness Allowance (DA) for government employees and pensioners.

The benefits will be payable from July 1,2010. This partially meets the state government employees’ demand for release of their financial dues.

“The employees will get DA in cash along with their January 2011 pay,and the arrears will be credited in their general provident fund accounts,” said Dhumal. The announcement was made at the state-level function held at Hamirpur,the CM’s home district.

The Statehood Day function,this year,has a special significance as Dhumal also announced year-long celebrations to showcase Himachal’s four-decade journey of development and growth.

Dhumal said: “The state has seen a phenomenal progress in the last 40 years,which is well reflected in the fact that its par capita income,which was Rs 651 in 1971 had gone up to Rs 49,211 in 2010. The State Gross Domestic Product,too,has increased from Rs 223 crore to Rs 42,278 crore and the annual plan from Rs 17 crore to Rs 3,000 crore. Even the literacy rate,which was only 23 per cent in 1971,went upto 84 per cent in 2010.”

Dhumal announced Rs 1.18 crore for a stadium in Government Boys Senior Secondary School,Hamiprur.

Sportspersons honoured,UID launched

The Himachal government honoured sportspersons,who won medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi and Asian Games in China. Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal presented a draft of Rs 41 lakh to Subedar Vijay Kumar for winning three gold medals and one silver in shooting events during the Commonwealth Games,beside two bronze in the Asian Games. Another Rs 8 lakh was given to shooter Samresh Jung who won a silver and a bronze in Commonwealth Games. Sonia Rai got Rs 5 lakh for winning silver in a shooting event in Asian Games and Meena Kumari Rs 3 lakh for winning a shooting bronze during Commonwealth Games. The CM also gave away cash prizes of Rs 40,000 to Sanjo Devi for winning two gold in athletics at the National Women Festival,Rs 20,000 to Neeraj Sharma for winning a gold,a silver and a bronze in various sailing events in Shanwei,China,ISAF Nations Cup at Mumbai and Qatar International March Racing Cup at Doha. Dhumal also formally launched the Unique Identity (UID) project on the occasion.
