Their families did not accept their relationship and allegedly issued threats (ARCHIVE)The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday directed the Chandigarh Police to examine and respond to a protection request submitted by a couple in a live-in relationship, who are fearing threats from their families.
Justice Harpreet Singh Brar was hearing a petition filed by the couple, both adults, who stated that they have chosen to live together but are facing opposition and threats from their respective families due to traditional and societal concerns.
According to the couple’s counsel, advocate Amit Kashyap, the petitioners have informed their families about their decision to live together. However, their families did not accept their relationship and allegedly issued threats. The couple filed a representation with the Chandigarh Police on April 6 seeking protection, but they claim no action has been taken.
During the hearing, Additional Public Prosecutor Tapan Masta accepted the notice on behalf of the Chandigarh Administration.
Justice Brar stated that without delving into the nature of the relationship or the authenticity of the documents submitted, the authorities must look into the couple’s concerns. The court directed the Chandigarh Police to decide on the couple’s request within one week of receiving the court’s order and to provide protection if there is any real threat to their life and liberty.
However, the judge clarified that the order does not offer immunity from legal consequences if any law is broken by the petitioners.
