The Chandigarh Police Wednesday made two more arrests in connection with the heritage furniture theft case. In the past two days, the police have arrested four suspects who were allegedly involved in the theft that took place last month at Arts College in Sector 10.

The police identified the two suspects arrested Wednesday as Anil and Rajesh, both residents of Sector 25. Both were involved in the theft with other two accused Sunil and Faquir Chand. “All four went to Arts College, Sector 10 on the night of January 18, stole the heritage chairs and tables and loaded the furniture in a tempo”, said inspector Neeraj Sarna, Station House Officer, Sector 3 police station.

Both Anil and Rajesh are scrap dealers. Two women, Sweety and Shakila, suspectedly involved in the theft are still at large. The police said the women’s mobile phone tower locations indicated that they were in Nahan, based on which the raids were conducted Wednesday.

Both Sweety and Shakila had also been living in a rented accommodation in Sector 25, before they went missing.

“The latest location of the phones used by both the women was traced to Nahan. We sent a team there but now the phones are switched off. We are working on some leads provided by the accused already in our custody,” said Sarna.

Police sources told Newsline that the theft was planned by some other persons, while the local scrap dealers were roped in merely to implement the plan.
