It is not everyday that scripts run around you and roles are tailor-made for you. Its a rare occurrence in a self-consumed Hindi film industry but Dolly Ahluwalia Tiwari is an exception. Her pot-smoking Punjaban-turned-saadhvi buaji avatar in Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana was a riot, and her award-winning part in Vicky Donor as the colourful Dolly Arora was fashioned to perfection. So fascinated was the films writer Juhi Chaturvedi with Dollys talent and personality that she wrote the role only for her.
Now,director Shashant A Shah has roped in Dolly for yet another gripping story,Bajatey Raho, and this time too,Dolly gets to deliver her best,as the films lead. A revenge comedy,Dolly will take the centrestage as Mrs Baweja, who, after the sudden death of her husband, takes charge. Its about good versus bad, giving the conman a taste of his own medicine, and Dolly says she will fit right in.
With 30 years of theatre and costume designing experience in her kitty,Dolly gets to play three different characters in the film. It was exciting, for I was on the other side of the fence of the costume drama, she says,as we caught up with her at her Manimajra residence. In terms of acting,Bajatey Raho was a challenge, she says, adding,Primarily because I was pitched alongside talented actors such as Ravi Kissen,Vinay Pathak,Ranvir Shorey and Tusshar Kapoor. These boys made me so nervous. I was floored by what a wonderful person Ravi is or how simple Tusshar is,and how humble Vinay and Ranvir are.
Dolly realises that bagging meaty and central roles for 50-plus actors, especially women,is difficult to come in youth-driven Hindi film industry. So,when Shashant offered this role,I was ecstatic as this is an encouragement for senior actors, she says. While Bajatey Raho releases this July 26,Dolly,who did the costumes for Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, also has her fingers crossed for that film which releases on July 12.
