A Haryana police head constable was killed while a gangster suffered bullet injuries in a cross-firing this afternoon at a Sonipat market.
The deceased policeman has been identified as Pradeep Kumar. Nearly a dozen rounds of fire were exchanged between four policemen and three armed gangsters for more than 20 minutes. The injured gangster has been identified as Ravinder Pugthala.
While one of the three armed men, who got critically injured in police firing was taken into custody, the other two managed to escape.
A Special Investigation Team of Sonipat police, led by Inspector Sandeep Kumar, was patrolling in the area in connection with a case when they intercepted a Renault Duster in which three persons were travelling. On seeing the police vehicle, the occupants tried to speed away. The police team got suspicious and gave them a chase.
“As our team closed in, one of the occupants of the SUV opened fire at the police team. A bullet hit head constable Pradeep. Police also returned fire. While one of the three accused got injured, the other two managed to escape. We are further investigating the matter,” one of the investigating police officials said.
Ravinder was referred to Rohtak’s Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences late evening.
