The Punjab and Haryana High Court has slapped a penalty of Rs 2,000 on Secretary School Education K B S Sidhu for not appearing in court in relation to a contempt of court petition filed against him by a teacher. Sidhu had been directed to appear in court on Monday.

While the counsel appearing on behalf of the secretary pleaded that he could not appear as he was scheduled to attend a meeting in Delhi, the court refused to entertain the reason and directed him to appear after lunch. The counsel later tendered an unconditional apology filed by Sidhu. Suspecting foul play and terming it as an “after thought”,the court observed that the apology was duly attested by the notary and was obtained on Monday itself in order to avoid appearance. Irked over this, the court slapped a penalty of Rs 2,000 on Sidhu.
