Third generation of the Lal clans in fray for the LS polls

Warring political families of Haryana are fighting a proxy battle in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections through their progeny. They include the third generation of all the three Lals — former deputy prime minister, late Devi Lal,former chief minister, late Bansi Lal and former chief minister Bhajan Lal.

This election is most important for Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s son Deepinder Hooda, who was handed over the mantle in Rohtak following the coronation of his father as Chief Minister.

Deepinder contested from Rohtak after Hooda vacated the seat and won it by a record margin of 2,32,098 votes, against his father’s margin of 1,50,435 votes. His constituency had been much pampered by the state government in the past three years, with almost all major projects given to Rohtak and Jhajjar.

Late Devi Lal’s third generation,Ajay Singh and Abhay Singh,is trying its best to re-establish the Indian National Lok Dal,which was thrown out of power with a humiliating score of zero in the last Lok Sabha election. This time,Ajay has already thrown his hat in the ring by announcing his candidature for Bhiwani. Abhay is unlikely to contest since the INLD has entered into an electoral arrangement with the BJP for this LS election.

Bansi Lal’s clan is already in the battlefield over getting a party ticket from Bhiwani. Bansi’s son Surender Singh, who died in a helicopter crash, lost the last election in Bhiwani. This time, his wife and state Forest Minister Kiran Choudhry is trying hard to get the Bhiwani ticket for her daughter,Shruti Choudhry. Kiran is facing competition from within the family as her brother-in-law and former BCCI president Ranbir Mahindra is making his own effort to push his son into politics from this constituency.

To beat both,Hooda is throwing his weight behind his trusted lieutenant and Chief Secretary,Dharamvir, from the constituency.

Bhajan Lal,on the other hand, has come into his own this time. Having made their mark in the state on the Congress platform, this Lal clan is fighting under the banner of new outfit,Haryana Janhit Congress. Kuldeep Bishnoi formed the HJC after his father was denied chief ministership.
