The sports department of Haryana is set to get a handsome amount out of the excise revenue earned by the state in the next financial year. The urban local bodies and panchayat and development departments, too, are going to benefit from the sale of liquor.

The excise department has decided to set aside 50 paise per bottle from the sale of liquor for promotion of sports. Sources in the department said the sports department would get at least Rs 20 crore in the next financial year as a result of the new initiative undertaken by the state government.

Haryana is the leading state in the country in doling out money and jobs to sportspersons who bring laurels to the state. Several sportspersons who excelled in various games have been given huge amounts, besides government jobs. “With more money in its kitty, the department will be able to provide better facilities to players,” said Excise and Taxation Minister Kiran Choudhry.

For country liquor, the government has fixed a target of 900 lakh proof litres this year, while for the IMFL,the limit is 500 lakh proof litres. No limit has been fixed for beer. The sale of country liquor this financial year is expected to be around 24 crore litres, while that for the IMFL is 7.44 crore litre. The sale of beer is expected to be around 12 crore bottles, according to sources.

“For the current year, the government had fixed a target of Rs 2,200 crore from the sale of liquor. Based on the growth rate achieved upto January,it will be able to achieve a revenue of more than Rs 2,250 crore. Next Year, the excise collection is expected to be around Rs 2,500 crore,” said Choudhry.

Welcoming the move,Haryana Sports Director O P Singh said it would encourage more players to take up sports as a career.

“It is a highly commendable move by the Haryana government. With more money for sports,we will be able to organise more programmes and attract more youth to sports. The success of cricket is because it pays to play the game. With more money in other games, more players will be encouraged to take them up,” said Singh.
