Haryana Municipal Election Results 2025: In landslide victory, BJP wins 9 out of 10 mayor posts

Five months after winning the Haryana Assembly polls for a third time, the ruling BJP on Wednesday registered a landslide victory in the civic body polls by winning the mayoral elections in nine out of 10 municipal corporations, except Manesar where an Independent candidate won.

The principal Opposition, the Congress, which was hoping to make a comeback after its dismal performance in the Assembly elections, failed to register any wins.

BJP candidates registered emphatic wins in Gurgaon, Faridabad, Ambala, Hisar, Karnal, Rohtak, Panipat, Sonipat and Yamunanagar by defeating their nearest Congress rivals. The polls for the nine municipal corporations were held on March 2, while the voting for Panipat took place on March 9.

“Nine of 10 mayoral candidates of BJP have won by thumping majority. As many as 90 per cent of the BJP candidates have won the elections for the wards of the municipal bodies,” Vipul Goel, Haryana Urban Local Bodies Minister, announced in the Assembly.

In Gurgaon, Raj Rani of BJP won against rival Seema Pahuja of Congress. In Rohtak, considered to be the stronghold of former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Ram Avtar Valmiki of BJP defeated Surajmal Kiloi of Congress.

In Faridabad, BJP candidate Praveen Joshi won by a margin of 3.16 lakh votes while defeating Congress’s Lata Rani. According to Goel, this is the highest margin of votes in these municipal elections.

Ashok Chhabra, the media coordinator in the Haryana government’s Information, Public Relations and Languages Department, claimed that the earlier record of winning a municipal corporation with highest margin of votes was set by Sunita Dayal of BJP when she won the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation election in Uttar Pradesh by a margin of 2.87 lakh votes in 2023.

In Sonipat, BJP leader Rajiv Jain, former media advisor to the Haryana chief minister, won against his rival Kamal Deewan. Jain’s wife Kavita, a two-time MLA, was a minister during the first BJP government led by Manohar Lal Khattar.

In Hisar, BJP candidate Praveen Popli won against Congress’s Krishan Singla while in Karnal, Renu Bala Gupta of BJP won against her rival from the Congress, Manoj Wadhwa.

In Yamunanagar, BJP’s Suman Bahmani won the poll battle against Congress’s Kirana Devi while in Panipat, Komal Saini of BJP defeated her rival Savita Garg. In the byelection for the mayoral poll in Ambala, BJP candidate Sailja Sachdeva defeated her rival Amisha Chawla of Congress.

In Ambala and Sonipat, byelections were held for the mayoral polls after former mayors Shakti Rani Sharma and Nikhil Madaan quit the Haryana Janchetna Party and the Congress, respectively, and joined the BJP ahead of the Assembly elections. While Sharma won the Kalka Assembly seat, Madaan won in Sonipat.

In Manesar, where municipal corporation elections were held for the first time, Independent candidate Inderjeet Yadav won, defeating her nearest BJP rival Sunder Lal by a margin of 2,293 votes.

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said the public has given a “third engine” to the towns to ensure non-stop development of the state. Hoping that the newly elected representatives will boost the speed of development, Saini said, “Today’s results have proved that the public of Haryana stands by development, transparency and good governance.”
