Irked over the power supply and sound system failing thrice at Yoga guru Baba Ramdev’s inaugural yoga event in Panchkula, Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij on Sunday recommended suspension of executive engineer (operations) of the power department for “not bothering to provide proper supply of electricity during a state-level function”.

Ministers, bureaucrats and top brass of the state had to perform yoga at parade ground in Sector 5 on Sunday morning when executive engineer (XEN) B S Ranga posted with the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vidyut Nigam Limited (UHBVNL) and incharge of the area was taken to task. As the sound system malfunctioned, even the big screens displayed at the venue went blank.

“I have recommended the suspension of the executive engineer. A state-level programme is going on and it is his responsibility to have everything in place, which wasn’t. Even otherwise, the Deputy Commissioner told me that he wasn’t working properly,” Vij told Chandigarh Newsline.

While the administration was left red-faced, Deputy Commissioner Garima Mittal refused to comment on the issue.

When the light went off for the first time, the Deputy Commissioner pulled up the XEN and told him to ensure proper supply. When the sound system malfunctioned for a second time, fuming Vij left the stage for a while, went behind and pulled up the XEN. However, the third time when the power went again, Vij recommended the suspension.

However, Ramdev reacted to the power outage in a lighter vein. “Light teen baar chali gayi, ab to mediawale bijli ki khabar zarur banayenge. Ab baba ya sarkar ke peechhe power house to laga nahi… light hai, chali jati hai, aa jaati hai. Bahar wali light to chali jaaye, apne andar ki light nahi jaani chahiye (Mediapersons have now got an issue to write about as light went thrice in my show. But the government or I are not carrying a power house along. Light goes and comes),” he said while performing yoga on the stage.

Talking to Chandigarh Newsline, executive engineer Ranga said that he was not at fault. “I just want to say that my job was to provide supply to eight points at the venue which I did. Light was there. Fans and other gadgets were working throughout the event. It is not my fault if the sound system did not work properly.”
