AS MANY as 14 people lost their lives while 28 persons on an average were injured daily in road accidents in Haryana in 2016-17, going by the data compiled by Haryana police. Gurgaon tops all the districts in Haryana with the highest number of fatalities followed by Sonepat and Karnal.
A total of 5,120 people were killed in the entire state in road accidents in the preceding year while 5024 were killed in 2016. Of these, majority were in the age group of 18 to 45 years. While 10,531 people were injured in 2016, there were 10,339 who got injured in 2017. From January 1 to October 31 2018, already 3882 people lost their lives in accidents.
As the state government is observing World Day of Remembrance for RoadTraffic Victims on November 18, the government is organising a “Run for Road safety” in Yamunanagar. Police officials are covering all 650 villages in Yamunagar and going house-to-house asking people to join the run.
Additional Director General of Police(ADGP) OP Singh who is organising the marathon said that poor enforcement, faulty road design, low awareness (that is higher speed from 30km/hr in two-wheelers and 50km/hr in four-wheelers) are the cause of accidents.
“ Being unprotected by helmet and unrestrained by seat belt multiplies the risk. Awareness, Enforcement and Safer Road designs need commensurate government attention and investment as accidents are deadlier than murder, killing five times more people in the state,” he said, adding that holding a run will make people more aware while driving.
While comparing it with the country, it was stated that nearly 1.3 million people die in road accidents each year, on average 3,287 deaths a day.
“Several accident-prone stretches are calling out for engineering interventions and signages along with enforcement to prevent overspending, rash overtaking, seat belt and helmets,” he added. The police also got comparative analysis of persons killed in accidents and those killed in murders.
“In Haryana in 2017, while 1046 persons were murdered, 5120 were killed in road accidents – a murder:accident ratio of 1:5. On the basis of available data, till October 2018, 934 were murdered. Till Sept 2018, 3882 got killed in accidents. Ratio continues to be 1:5,” he added.
