At a state level function organised in Morni,the Haryana Forest Department initiated celebrations of Wildlife Week today.
The Union Minister for Housing,Urban Poverty Alleviation and Culture,Kumari Selja,was the chief guest on the occasion,which was presided over by Captain Ajay Singh Yadav,Minister of Power,Forest and Environment,Haryana. Condemning the illegal hunting of wild animals,Selja said that steps will be taken to ensure that such incidents do not crop up.
Yadav said that a proposal is being sent to the central government to initiate the construction of a zoo at Morni. He said that Haryana is the first state to have a Protection and Reproduction Centre for the species of vulture and Indian gazelle that are on the verge of extinction. He said,Vultures are dying because of the banned pain killer Diclofenac given to domestic animals,which are consumed by these birds of prey. The Protection and Reproduction Centre at Morni started with two pairs of vultures,and has about 150 pairs now.
He added that the protection and rehabilitation of elephants is also on the Forest Departments agenda,with a centre for them in Yamunanagar being established.
