India's top wrestlers held off from throwing their medals into the country's sacred Ganges River on Tuesday as part of an ongoing protest against sexual harassment after community leaders intervened and persuaded them against doing so. Following a call of nationwide protests by the Sanyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) to support the protesting wrestlers, several government employees’ associations and trade unions have also announced their support to participate in the demonstrations across Haryana on Thursday.
Farmer organisations and trade unions shall also be holding rallies and demonstrations in Chandigarh and across all the district headquarters of Haryana.
All India State Employees Union has also announced to participate in the protest demonstrations and rallies on Thursday.
The state police force has also been put on high alert to avert any disruption of law and order and ensure that commuters do not face any harassment in case of any road blockades.
Farmer unions under the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) called for a mahapanchayat in Mundlana village in Sonipat district on June 4. BKU leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni Wednesday appealed to the residents of Mundlana constituency to take part in a ‘khel-panchayat’ on June 4 in support of protesting wrestlers.
The wrestlers have been protesting since April 23 seeking the arrest of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, on grounds of sexual harassment of women athletes, including a minor.
“We shall be holding a panchayat in Mundlana on June 4 in which former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik will be participating. Apart from this, Rajya Sabha MP Jayant Chaudhary and some sportspersons will also join us. You are all aware about the happenings going on in the country. We have to take a call on our future course of action,” Chaduni said in a video message released on Wednesday evening.
He said that the circumstances are not fit to live in this country as “there is no justice” left. “You all will have to take the lead. I will appeal to all my brothers and sisters to reach there to show our strength. I also request all our workers to hold meetings in their respective areas and publicise this as much as they can. All of us should reach Mundlana sports stadium and participate in this khel-panchayat,” Chaduni said.
