A HARYANA Police woman constable Friday attempted suicide allegedly after sexual harassment by some police officers, including an SP-rank officer, at Haryana Police Academy, Madhuban, Karnal.
Karnal district police chief Pankaj Nain has referred the complaint to the sexual harassment committee of Karnal police for further probe.
The constable had consumed a poisonous substance this morning after which she was rushed to a hospital by her colleagues. She is out of danger.
The constable has represented Haryana in national athletic championships. In her complaint to Nain, she has alleged that she was also abused by her superior officers on the phone and they also indulged in her character assassination.
A few other women police athletes, training in HPA, have come out in support of the complianant and alleged that while the senior officers posted in HPA would not bother male athletes, women athletes were being harassed for various reasons.
Sub-Inspector Kamaldeep Rana, Investigating Officer of the case, said, “We will take action on the constable’s complaint.”
“We have recorded the constable’s statement in the hospital. She has levelled allegations of harassment at workplace, against her superior officers and staff of HPA. We have referred the matter to the sexual harassment committee to probe further into the case,” Nain said.
Soon after the case was highlighted by the media, CLP leader Kiran Choudhry issued a statement demanding strict action against the accused officers.
