Former CHART trainee Vijayant Malik wins both his singles, doubles match in ITF mens futures tournament in Chandigarh.
For the second time, when Vijayant Malik stepped on Court No 1 on Monday afternoon, there wasn’t any sign of fatigue on his face. More than the easy first round singles match against Anvit Bendre, which he won 6-3,6-1,it was his return to the same stadium, where he grew up learning tennis, that excited him. He was now ready to face the pair of Vignesh Peranamallur and Vijay Sundar Prashanth while partnering with Saketh Myneni in the doubles first round match in the ITF men’s futures $15,000 tennis tournament being held at the CLTA Stadium in Sector 10.
With the sun playing hide and seek,Vijayant and Saketh made full use of the pleasant weather and easily decimated their opponent,6-1,6-4,to move into the second round. Vijayant and Saketh, both members of the Indian Davis Cup team, combined well to easily overpower their opponents.
Earlier,in what was the first singles match of the main draw,Vijayant, the former CHART trainee and the seventh seed in the tournament, made short work of Anvit and easily won the first set,6-3. He was even more belligerent in the second set and easily won it 6-1.
Meanwhile, second seed Sriram Balaji also moved into the second round by defeating CLTA trainee Pranav Suri. Balaji looked in good touch and easily won the first set 6-2.
However,he faced resistance from Pranav, who was playing his first professional circuit tournament,in the second set. He matched Balaji shot for shot and it wasn’t until the tenth game that Suri looked overwhelmed by the higher seed player. Balaji broke him in the tenth game and won the set,6-4,in the match that lasted one hour and 20 minutes.
Qualifier Rakshit Rishi played a superb game and defeated 1146 ranked Ajai Selvaraj in a hard-fought match. Ajai used his experience and muscle to take the first set,6-0. Rishi made a good comeback and won the second set,6-4,and kept his good form by claiming the third and final set,7-5,to enter the next round.
In doubles, second seed Sriram Balaji and Ranjit Virali Murugesan faced stiff resistance from Jatin Dahiya and Shahbaaz Khan but eventually managed to beat them 7-6(9) 6-4. Third seed Yuki Bhambri and Vivek Shokeen also squeezed past Neeraj Elangovan and Ajai Selvaraj,7-5 6-4.
