A seminar on Labour Laws and Statutory Compliances was organised by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India at the PHD Chambers Chamber of Commerce and Industry,Chandigarh office.
Comply with labour laws or face the consequences, said Justice Mehtab Singh Gill (former acting chief justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court).
Emphasising on the aspect of compliance,he said,Companies try all kinds of back-door methods to fulfill their compliance obligations under labour laws. But the litmus test arises when a company is embroiled in a dispute and the matter is referred to court.
The first question the court wants to know is whether the company has been complying with various laws applicable to it. If not,be ready to face the consequences, he added.
Bringing up the unrest that unfolded at the Maruti plant in Haryana,Justice Gill said,Had the management been vigilant, such labour unrest would not have occurred.
After an inaugural introduction,Mukesh Sharma (Chairman ICSI – Chandigarh Chapter) said that such seminars should be organised more often as they help bring to light the importance of various labour laws that are applicable to different organisations.
Prominent among the speakers was Anupam Malik (Joint Labour Commissioner – Haryana) and Prabhjit Singh (Attorney and Founder – Evaluer).
