Nearly a dozen operations had to be postponed on Friday as the sterilisation machine in the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital,Sector 16 (GMSH-16),developed a technical snag. The hospital authorities have sought an explanation from the caretakers of the machine. The snag, which was restored in two hours, left many patients and their attendants angry with the hospital administration.
If a machine develops a snag in a hospital, there have to be alternative arrangements so that patients dont suffer, said an attendant Ashok, whose cousin was scheduled to be operated on at GMSH. We waited for two hours and were later told that the surgery will take place on Saturday. Many attendants were seen waiting outside the operation theatres from the morning to find out when the machine would be restored . We can only wait, said another attendant.
The machine that developed a snag supplies sterilised material to the hospital and controls hospital infection. As it developed a snag, the sterilisation of linen, instruments, surgical gloves and dressing material was not possible; so a few operation were delayed, said a GMSH officer. The snag was restored after two hours and operations in the emergency department were not hampered. We have sought an explanation from the officers who handle the machine, he added.
