In a violation of the court orders,Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) is acquiring 406 acres in Hoshiarpur village for the Eco-City 2 project at much lower rates. A district court had recently ruled that the said land will be acquired at Rs 2.3 crore per acre.

However,GMADA is paying only Rs 1.8 crore per acre,a violation that has affected 80-90 farmers. A growing resentment among the farmers has been witnessed for the last few days, who have submitted a memorandum to GMADA in this regard and also alleged that GMADA is deliberately acquiring their land right before the new land acquisition bill comes into force so that GMADA gets it at a much lower rate.

Sanjeev Kumar,Estate Officer,GMADA,agreed that land was being acquired at lesser rates. “We have challenged that decision in the high court because such a high rate is not justified,” he said.
