The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has announced a significant reduction in enhancement rates for sectors 76 to 80, bringing relief to thousands of homeowners. Earlier, the enhancement rate was Rs 3,164 per square metre, which has now been reduced to Rs 2,325 per square metre.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, MLA Kulwant Singh said that residents had been raising their voice against the steep enhancement charges for a long time. A joint committee of homeowners too had been pressing the government to revise the rates downward. The MLA added that he personally took up the issue with Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal. “The enhancement rate has been brought down from Rs 3,164 to Rs 2,325 per square metre. Those who have already paid at higher rates will receive a refund,” said Kulwant.

He explained that the delay in resolving the issue was primarily due to political interference. “Some people tried to politicise the issue and collected money from residents to file court cases, which only prolonged the process,” he said.

Expressing gratitude to CM Mann and officials of the Housing and Urban Development Department, Singh said, “It’s not easy to reduce enhancement once it’s been fixed. The government has taken a commendable step by offering relief to the people.”

He said that the proposal had already been approved in the GMADA meeting and the official notification is expected next week. After that, residents can either deposit their due amount or apply for refunds.

On the issue of interest, Singh clarified, “Interest was levied only in cases where residents approached the court. The government’s latest decision is fair, and people should settle their dues at the earliest.”
