A DAY after three masked men robbed a liquor vend employee of Rs 7.2 lakh in broad daylight in Sector 17, the police on Wednesday said there were gaps in the sequence of events that led to the crime, and did not rule out the possibility of an insider’s involvement.
Three masked men had attacked the employee of a liquor vend, owned by Sanjeev Abrol, a resident of Sector 50, Chandigarh, and snatched a cash bag containing Rs 7.2 lakh from him outside the house of Sanjeev’s brother Rajeev in Sector 17, Panchkula. The incident took place when the employee, Bhushan, had come alone from the liquor vend in Industrial Area, Phase 2, in Bolero jeep to deliver the cash in Sector 17.
According to eyewitnesses, the accused had fired three shots in the air and fled in their white Etios car towards Sector 17 market. However, the police recovered only one bullet shell from the spot. The digits of the registration number of the car as told by Bhushan were found incorrect.
“There are certain gaps which need to be investigated. The accused were armed with weapons, and there are various stretches from Industrial Area, Phase 2, to Rajeev’s residence in Sector 17, where they could have intercepted the victim. But they chose to attack him right outside the owner’s house,” said a police official. The victim was alone in the car at the time of the incident.
The incident took place in broad daylight, and there were some eyewitnesses whose statements have been recorded by the police. “The accused caught the victim, threatened him, fired shots in the air, snatched the bag, reversed their car, and fled in the same direction. Their plan could have fallen flat, had a car come from behind. It is a narrow lane, and several cars remain parked. Somehow, it does not make sense,” the police official said.
The right indicator of the accused’s car was also damaged when it hit the wall of a neighbour’s house while they were reversing the car. According to the police, the accused might have taken National Highway 21, leading to Zirakpur, to escape.
While the police recently arrested a few local gangs involved in robberies, they are investigating the involvement of an inter-state gang. “We are investigating the case from all angles. We do not rule out anything at this moment,” said Inspector Sukhbir Singh, SHO, Sector 14 Police Station.
