The Chandigarh Police claim to have busted a gang of auto-lifters and snatchers and arrested three persons. A total of seven vehicles have been recovered from their possession. Those arrested have been identified as Arjun (27),a resident of Burail; Rinku (30),again from Burail; and Ranjit (23),a resident of Attawa.
The trio have been arrested by different police parties of Police Station,Sector 36,Chandigarh,under the supervision of Inspector Anokh Singh. While Arjun was arrested on November 19 about 9.30 pm from Sector-35 market,Rinku was arrested from Sector-42 market; Ranjit Singh was arrested near chowk Sector 36/42 on November 20.
Their modus operandi was to steal vehicles by using a duplicate key and keep these vehicles at different places after fixing fake numbers upon them. During interrogation they said they planned to use these vehicles for snatchings in the area of Chandigarh, said Satbir Singh,Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP),Crime. He added that the three accused are drug addicts and had started committing thefts and snatchings in order to purchase drugs. The trio have a criminal background. Arjun Singh is involved in three cases of vehicle and house thefts. Of the four cases,Arjun was convicted in three cases. Rinku was named in two FIRs registered on charges of theft. Ranjit stands convicted in all the three FIRs registered against him on charges of theft.
A total of seven vehicles have been recovered from the possession of trio. After interrogating Parminder Singh who attempted to snatch a purse belonging to a local girl Mona Sharma on November 19,the Chandigarh Police has recovered eight mobiles from possession of Parminder Singh.
