From Babli to Pinki,pet names galore in Punjab Assembly

Babli,Tinu,Pinki,Ashu,Babbi,Channi,Manna,Boni,Babbu and Jindu are a few elected Punjab MLAs.

Babli,Tinu,Pinki,Ashu,Babbi,Channi,Manna,Boni,Babbu,and Jindu.

These are the some of the Punjab’s recently elected MLAs,who have adopted different names in place of their surnames.

Most of these elected MLAs said that they were mostly known by these names and as such,did not mind being addressed in such a manner. Moreover,pet names are easy to to recall,they added.

First-time MLA Guriqbal Kaur Babli,wife of former Congress MLA late Parkash Singh from Nawanshahr,said: “It is my pet name which my parents gave me. This name reminds me of my childhood days and I like to be addressed as Babli. It is like a surname for me.” Babli defeated SAD candidate Satinder Kaur,also a first-timer and wife of former SAD MLA late Jatinder Singh Kariha.

Rajnish Kumar Babbi,a Congress rebel who contested independently from Mukerian constituency,won against sitting BJP minister Arunesh Shakir. He said,“Everybody knows me as Babbi,so I attached my pet name to my formal name. It earns me affection from the people of my constituency.”

Political experts said that earlier people in Punjab preferred their village’s name in place of their surnames but now pet names are trending.

Punjab has more such MLAs: Pawan Tinu (SAD) from Adampur in Jalandhar; Amarpal Singh Boni,SAD (B) from Ajnala; BJP’s Dinesh Singh Babbu from Sujanpur; Congress’ Parminder Singh Pinki and Bharat Bhushan Ashu from Ferozpur City and Ludhiana West respectively; Charanjit Channi (Congress) from Chamkaur Sahib,SAD’s Joginder Singh Jindu from Ferozpur Rural; SAD’s Manjit Singh Manna from Baba Bakala.

A few like with such names have also lost the elections. They include Luv Kumar Goldi (Congress),Karanjit Rintu (Congress),Jasbir Dimpa (Congress ) and Sukhpal Nannu (SAD).
