The problem of stench from the garbage processing plant and dumping ground is being experienced once again in the city. The stench is an annual problem that the residents of some sectors face. While the civic body has over the years tried several measures, these have not worked.
The problem that was being experienced during the rainy season over the past few years surfaced this time at the end of the monsoon season. Much debate has been witnessed over the issue in the past. Earlier when the problem was persistent, the management of the garbage plant had been asked to install some equipment.
Municipal Commissioner Vivek Pratap Singh conducted a check at the plant at Dadumajra as well as the dumping ground on Tuesday after receiving complaints of stench emanating from the area. Directions were issued for following proper procedures and taking precautions to check the cause of the stench.
The Municipal Commissioner asked for proper maintenance of the dumping ground and also checking for any problems in the plant. The stench was experienced in some areas over the past three days. The issue was also discussed at the meeting of Finance and Contract Committee. Councillor Pardeep Chhabra said that the problem was being experienced over the past few days and residents of Sector 22 had approached him for this.
The civic body has not been able to pinpoint the problem for the stench with allegations traded in the past between the plant management and MC. While the plant management had been stating that the dumping ground was the source of the foul smell, the MC had alleged that the fumes emanating from the plant were the cause.
