Forest department apprise officials, cops about amendment to Wild Life (Protection) Act, 2022

The Department of Forests and Wildlife Preservation, Punjab, in collaboration with Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), conducted a one-day sensitisation programme for the Forest and Police officials of Punjab at Mahendra Zoological Park Chhatbir Zoo.

The programme was focused specifically on the recent amendment to the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 2022 that came into the force on April 1, 2023.

Topics on recent trends of wildlife crime and identification of species in trade were also covered.

“In the recent amendments in the Wild Life Protection Act, CITES (The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) were also included. It means thousands of species, which are exotic to India, are now cover under the Indian Wild Life Protection Act. Besides it, earlier only the general police and Forest department were authorised to take legal action against the Wild Life crimes. Now onwards, Coastal services and custom departments were also authorised to take legal actions pertaining to the Wild Life crime cases,” Harpal Singh, Education Officer, Chhatbir Zoo, said.

The programme was attended by 71 officials and was inaugurated by the HoFF, Punjab, RK Mishra, IFS.

The Chief Wild Life Warden (CWLW), Punjab, Dharmender Sharma, also addressed the gathering.

The programme was aimed at improving coordination between Police and Wildlife officials to combat organised wildlife crime. It also helped the participants in understanding the recently amended portions of the Act.
