Arun Grover took charge as the 12th Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University here on Monday. The 61-year-old physicist has been an alumnus as well as a faculty member at the university, and this association, according to him, will turn out to be an advantage for him in gauging the developmental needs of the university.
Joining the office at 9 am,after outgoing V-C R C Sobti conducted the formers taking-over ceremony,Grover addressed the faculty members.
Later, addressing a gathering of reporters,he said that at present,PU matched the excellence of Scientific University of Hyderabad, supposed to be the best research institution in India featuring in the top 300 universities in the world.
Our biggest endeavour will be to bring it among the top 100 universities across the world in the next five to 10 years, he said. I am not afraid of experimenting and doing unusual things. For taking the university to a new high,I will have to get down to out-of-the-box thinking.
The new V-C spoke on a number of issues. Heres the low-down.
I will call a meeting with the faculty members and take their inputs into consideration. I will identify proposals and projects which have been lying pending for long. Until we ensure headway in these,we will not take up any new development projects. I will also extend my support to research work at all the departments.
SHORTAGE OF STAFF
I will ensure that the problem is addressed at the earliest. In case, there are any bottlenecks,we will resolve them as early as possible. It is pertinent for us to note that the non-teaching staff assume a lot of significance for any institution, especially a university cannot do well without the support staff.
The syndicate meeting is to be held every month, going by the norms of the university. Since we need to call the meeting after at least a 10-day notice,I would ensure that the meeting is held at the earliest. We hope to hold the meeting on August 4.
STUDENT COUNCIL,SENATE POLLS
Both Senate elections and Student Council elections are routine events and there should be no burden on our minds about them. As the V-C of the university,my role remains restricted to ensuring adherence to the rules by all candidates. V-Cs may change but these procedures should remain unaffected.
In addition to my research work,I have played the role of an NGO operating from within the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research,Mumbai,by organising a number of special functions. I have been selecting the special alumni for the alumni association lecture every year for the past 12 years. This year as well,I will be joining the alumni association celebrations at TIFR on July 29.
Change of roles
Director Public Relations (DPR) Mohanmeet Khosla has resigned from the post. The university is looking for a new DPR. The name of Dr Archana R Singh, currently chairperson of School of Communication Studies,is being considered for the post. However, nothing has been finalised.
New Officer on Special Duty S L Verma was appointed by the V-C on Monday. Earlier,Santosh Chopra was handling the charge.
