For a population close to 10 lakh,Mohali district has less than 2,000 cops. The acute crunch of the police force has left a single cop to fend for almost 500 residents. As per norms,at least 7,000 cops are required to safeguard the entire district.

Not only the shortage of police force but also the frequent movement of VVIPs to this Chandigarh-adjoining district keeps the available police force on its toes most of the time, leaving routine policing neglected. Even as the total population of Mohali district,as per the 2011 census figures, has touched 9,86,147,with the highest population growth rate of 32.02 per cent in Punjab over the last decade, its police department is still ill-equipped.

After being accorded the status of district in April 2006,Mohali was provided a police force on deputation from other districts and wings of the state police but even after over five years, the available police force is below 28 per cent of the actual requirement. The infrastructure too is highly inadequate.

Despite all the odds,Mohali SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar claims,“With the present resources,we have been able to keep a tab on the law and order situation, which is evident from the steep decline in the overall crime rate.” The only boost in the police force strength had come last year, with the recruitment of 359 male constables in the first ever police recruitment in Mohali district. Though the district police keep sending requests seeking additional forces, the state headquarters have not yet increased the number of sanctioned posts, which still remains at around 3,000.

Since Mohali district was carved out from areas of the erstwhile Ropar and Patiala districts,a substantial number of policemen were initially transferred here from these districts while the rest of the police force available here was on deputation from 20 other districts,GRP,PAP,Commando,Computer and RTC Bahadurgarh.

“Due to its location in the immediate vicinity of Chandigarh,Mohali is overburdened with VVIP duties, which keep most of our force and even senior officials on their toes most of the time,” said a senior district police official, pointing out that hardly a day passes when a VVIP does not visit or pass through here.

Maintaining that the staff shortage is adversely affecting the day-to-day functioning of the district police, officials said,“Mohali requires even more police personnel due to its sharing of boundaries with Chandigarh,Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, besides having an excessive load of duties.”
