It was playback singer Sonu Niigaams sabbatical from the film industry in 2010 that had director Girish Maliks thoughts racing. Malik had heard the music Niigaam had created with Janet Jackson apart from his other tunes when he was in the US. I was creating music to my hearts content and doing some no holds barred crazy stuff there, says Niigaam. Malik chose to rope in the singer to compose music for his debut film Jal a National Film Development Corporation project based on water scarcity in the Rann of Kutch. The film premieres at the ongoing Busan International Film Festival.
This one got the creative juices flowing so easily. There is enough virginity in the thought that makes the sound of Jal fresh and fluid. Also,Girish trusted me with this and let me have a free reign. Intrusive directors can be a bit of a problem, says Niigaam, who has teamed with ace percussionist Bickram Ghosh to create the films music. Bickram and I have known each other for a few years. I enjoy the camaraderie I share with him, says Niigaam.
Niigaams tryst with composing music began much before he began to sing professionally. As a child, during his riyaz,he would improvise upon what he heard. He become an important cog in the film music machinery, apart from being a favourite with the music composers for his ability to improvise. After working tirelessly for 22 years,Niigaam believes that it is the idea of creative satisfaction and growth that has turned him into a composer. I composed for Chanda Ki Doli,an album I had done some years ago. But a film is a different ballgame all together. One has to understand the thought process of the director and the film to create music, says Niigaam, who has also worked on the background score for the film.
A three-track film,Niigaam and Ghosh have also penned the lyrics for the film. The title track blends haunting ragas of Marwa and Puriya and combines it with the Armenian duduk in Jal de,sung by Shubha Mudgal. The duo has also roped in Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan for one of the tracks. Niigaam is looking at more such projects and his next will be the title track of Anil Sharmas Sunny Deol-Amrita Rao starrer,Singh Saab The Great.
