As theatre actor and director Chakresh Kumar geared up for the 101st show of Death of Humanity at the Sector 17 Plaza on Tuesday,he was aware that the play looked very different from its beginning. The production, which began as a creative protest against the Delhi gang-rape,is today woven with various news stories on the abuse of women.
The design of the play is such that it changes with the time. We watch news, scan newspapers, look at magazines to highlight cases and incidents of violence against women, says Kumar, who has several shows lined up in Punjab and Haryana with his Alankar Theatre group.
He has also incorporated the recent case of violence against a couple in Sector 15,who decided to marry against their parents wishes. Death of Humanity began as an improvised performance in Rose Garden a day after the gang-rape in Delhi in december, says Kumar.
There were mixed feelings of rage, anger, sorrow, fear, shame and it all translated as a visual, dramatic and moving performance. As artistes,we owe it to society and so this play is a product of the people,as we rely on donations by the audience to keep it going and taking it places, informs Kumar, who now hopes to take the play to the village of Bhagat Singh.
Death of Humanity has been staged in Chandigarh,Punjab and Jantar Mantar and National School of Dramas Rang Mahotsav in Delhi.
