CRIMINAL COMPLAINT against ex-deputy cm : Cannot wait till April, but will give him a couple of days’ time, say police

A day after receiving a fax message from “elusive” former Haryana deputy chief minister Chander Mohan alias Chand Mohammad, the Mohali police want him to immediately reply, through fax,to the allegations levelled against him by his second wife Fiza.

While repeated calls made to the UK number from which the fax was sent to the Mohali senior superintendent of police (SSP) on Friday night went unanswered till Saturday evening, the police are also trying to send the message to Chand through his local contacts.

“If he is unable to appear before us,we want him to fax us his reply to the allegations made by Fiza,so that we can take note of his statement in the ongoing inquiry into the criminal complaint against him,” Superintendent of Police (City) Varinder Pal Singh told Newsline.

On February 16,Singh was assigned investigation into the charges of rape, cheating, hurting religious sentiments, defamation and criminal intimidation levelled against Chand by his second wife Anuradha Bali alias Fiza.

In his message to the SSP,Chand had said he would return in April and join investigations.

“We cannot wait till April, but we will certainly give him a couple of days to reply before concluding our investigation,” said the SP (City),making it clear that if Chand failed to submit his reply in the next few days,he would conclude the inquiry report ex parte and submit it to the SSP for initiating appropriate action as per law.

In the fax,Chand had claimed himself to be a “law abiding citizen”,seeking time to reply to Fiza’s allegations.

Reacting to the development,Fiza termed it as Chand’s “delaying tactics”. “It is all political drama, which he is enacting to run away from the course of law,” she said.

Fiza accused Chand of making a “lame excuse” of going abroad for medical treatment. “Is he being treated for his mental illness?” Fiza asked, accusing Chand of making contradictory statements. She urged the Mohali police to lodge an FIR on her complaint without waiting for Chand’s return.

Several local leaders of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) and Shiv Sena (Hindustan),meanwhile, pledged support to Fiza in her “fight” and threatened to resort to traffic jam if the police failed to take action against Chand.

IO shifted but will continue probe
Investigation Officer (IO) Varinder Pal Singh was transferred as AIG Crime (Headquarters) in Chandigarh late on Friday. Sukhwant Singh Gill was posted in his place as SP (City). Varinder is,however, still conducting the probe and is likely to complete it before relinquishing his charge next week.

Double signatures
In his short message addressed to the Mohali SSP,the former Haryana deputy CM had made double signatures in English as Chander Mohan alias Chand Mohammad.
