Father of Muktsar NEET 2017 topper wants probe into son’s suicide: ‘I used to talk to him every morning and evening’

Former Faridkot MP Jagmeet Singh Brar has written a letter to Amit Shah for a probe into the death of Dr Navneet Singh by CBI.

In June 2017, Dr Singh hit the headlines after he got AIR 1 in NEET. He had said he wanted to study at Maulana Azad Medical College because of its fee structure. He had said cracking NEET was his main target and hence he was satisfied with his 88 per cent in Class 12 board examinations. In June 2017, Dr Singh hit the headlines after he got AIR 1 in NEET. The father of Dr Navdeep Singh, the National Eligibility cum Entrance ( NEET) topper from 2017, on Sunday demanded an inquiry into the alleged suicide of his son at Delhi’s Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) earlier this month.

Dr Singh, 25, who belonged to Muktsar in Punjab and was a second-year MD student at MAMC, was found dead on September 15.

While speaking to The Indian Express, Gopal Singh, principal, Government Senior Secondary School, Sarainaga, said, “Navdeep was a bright student. He was a hardworking person and was in the second year of his MD in radiology. What prompted him to take such an extreme step to end his life when he was about to be a super-specialist? Isn’t it a matter to be investigated? I have lost my son but society has lost a doctor… I urge the home minister of India to get the matter investigated thoroughly and take steps accordingly to prevent such incidents in future”.

“I still can’t believe that he died by suicide. I used to talk to him every morning as well as evening. On Saturday morning, we had a brief chat and on Saturday evening, he didn’t pick up his phone. When he didn’t pick up his phone the whole night, I requested one of our relatives to go to his place and inquire about him. However, we got this shocking news that our beloved son was no more,” said Gopal Singh.

He said the Delhi Police have told them that his son’s death was a case of suicide.

“It was last Sunday (September 15) that we got the news of his suicide. Eight days have passed and we have got no clue from the police, though we had given his laptop and mobile phone to them to investigate. I am deeply saddened as this loss is irreparable for me but at that same time unable to understand the reason for this extreme step. He used to feel pressured at times, but I am unable to digest what triggered him,” Gopal Singh said.

He said Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann should intervene and get the matter probed.

Former Faridkot MP Jagmeet Singh Brar said he has written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for a probe into the death of Dr Navneet Singh by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). “It is so shocking to hear this news that a young and talented person has left the world so early. I have known his family for a long time and I can’t believe that Navdeep would have taken this extreme step. Hence, I have written to Home Minister Amit Shah on Gopal Singh’s behalf seeking a CBI probe into this incident. It shouldn’t be closed by calling it a mere suicide incident”.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police said no suicide note was found in the room at the Parsi Dharamshala where Dr Navdeep Singh lived in the national capital.

A six-member team of doctors from the Delhi Medical Council is probing the alleged suicide of Dr Navdeep Singh. The fact-finding committee will investigate the working and learning conditions in medical colleges in Delhi, according to sources.
