Farmers and police clash in Punjab’s Gurdaspur over land acquisition for highway; 7 injured say union

A minor clash broke out between the police and farmers Tuesday in two villages of Punjab’s Gurdaspur district Tuesday during a protest against land acquisition for a national highway project. The injured farmers were admitted to the government hospital in Harchowal.
“The farmers gathered in front of the Gurdwara Sahib in Nangal Jhor village and started a sit-in against the police’s attempt to forcefully acquire land for a national highway project. There was a scuffle between the police and farmers over land acquisition for the Jammu-Katra Express Highway, resulting in injuries to seven farmers,” said Sarwan Singh Pandher, president, Kisan Mazdoor Sangarsh Committee.
“The police forcibly removed their turbans and destroyed their wheat crops. No compensation has been paid for the land which was being acquired,” added Pandher.
He said the injured farmers have been identified as Parminder Singh, Ajaib Singh, Gurmukh Singh, Harjit Singh, Ajit Singh, Nishan Singh, and Ajit Singh Bhittewind.
