Farmer killed as earth caves in

One farmer was killed while another was rescued after the duo were buried alive when they went down in a trench to repair a tubewell and the earth caved in following heavy rain at Gunmjal village in Abohar tehsil of Fazilka district.

One farmer was killed while another was rescued after the duo were buried alive when they went down in a trench to repair a tubewell and the earth caved in following heavy rain at Gunmjal village in Abohar tehsil of Fazilka district.

Gyan Prasad suffocated to death while Pawan Kumar was brought out alive after three hours of rescue operation. He was rushed to Ganganagar hospital. Earlier,Kumar’s climbed down the earthen shaft at 3 pm to repair a snag in his tubewell. His neighbour Gyan Prasad also stepped in to help him. However,following heavy rain the shaft wall caved in,burying them inside.

Two farmers working in the nearby fields called for help and started the rescue operations.

Deputy Commissioner Basant Garg too reached the spot with a medical team. Kumar was pulled out but heavy rain hampered the operation and Gyan Prasad could be taken out only at 6 pm. He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead.

Abohar MLA Sunil Jakhar has demanded compensation for Gyan Prasad’s family.
