The family members of Atma Ram,who died Thursday due to an accident with stray cattle on August 17,have demanded that adequate compensation should be given for his children, who are students, and also that his wife be given his job as a civilian chef.
Atma Ram is the third victim of the stray cattle menace this year. His family members have taken his body to his home town in Himachal Pradesh for cremation. Atma Ram was riding a two-wheeler when it hit stray cattle on August 17. He was the sole breadwinner of the family and had been working as civilian chef since 1989. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and a son.
On August 17,Atma Ram (49) was coming to his government-allotted house in Sector 46 from a party organised by the Army office at 299 transit camp,Hallomajra, when his scooter rammed into stray cattle near the Sector-46-47 roundabout. The PCR rushed him to the Government Medical Hospital,Sector 32,where he remained on ventilator till he died on August 22.
Atma Rams younger brother Milap Singh, who also works in the Army transit camp as a civilian chef and lives with his family close to Atma Rams house, said,I was shocked to see the injuries on his head because of stray cattle. Atma was already a heart patient due to which he couldnt recover at all.
This is not the first time that someone has died because of stray cattle, but the Administration behaves as if it has nothing to do with the residents. For them,it must be just another citizen, but we have lost a family member.
Since my brother was the only breadwinner,I want that my sister-in-law should be given Atmas job. Otherwise,it will be very difficult for the children, who are still studying. After I return from Himachal,I will make sure that the issue of stray cattle is taken seriously by the Municipal Corporation, he added.
One of Atma Rams colleagues,Kalam Singh said,The news of his sudden death is hard to believe, since it was not a major accident. Whom to blame when our administration is sleeping? The stray cattle are still on the roads.
