A former member of the Panjab University Student Union (PUSU) entered into a scuffle with other members of the party after he tried to tear off the party banner put on the tent near the Boys Hostel no. 1 at Panjab University on Sunday.
The scuffle broke out around 3 pm when Gurinder Minhas,a former party president, came near the partys tent and tried to tear off the banner. While the other party members tried to stop him,the police intervened and took Minhas to the Sector 11 police station, where he was later let off after being issued a warning.
Minhas, who was appointed as party president,on June 4 had decided to give unconditional support to the National Students Union of India (NSUI) along with former PUSU chairman Baljit Chaudhary on Saturday.
Manoj Lubana, campus president,NSUI,confirmed it,saying Minhas had now joined NSUI.
However,Ravinder Singh Dhaliwal, party president,PUSU,said: There are certain people who are trying to malign the party name. We had already expelled them from the party long back.
Minhas and Chaudhary were allegedly involved in the June 19 attack on the then party president Yadvinder Singh Dhaliwal near the gate no.1 of the varsity, after which a police complaint was lodged at the Sector-11 police station. The probe is still on. Both Chaudhary and Minhas had declared unconditional support to the NSUI on Saturday.
