Former chief architect M N Sharma has expressed reservations about new proposals for the Sukhna Lake. In a letter to UT Administrator General S F Rodrigues (Retd),Sharma has asked him to intervene and preserve the original concept of the Sukhna Lake and its surroundings.
Sharma says the idea of conserving the seasonal Sukna Choe to make the lake was readily accepted by Le Corbusier as an added feature in the citys plan. The task of making one-and-a-half mile long dam was accomplished to act as a speciously landscaped boulevard for passive recreation of the citizens. The Administration is now planning to light up the boulevard by installing lights and other features.
Implementation of such a proposal,he says, would ruin the sanctity and peaceful atmosphere of the lake. The founders of the city have offered the lake and dam to the citizens so that they may escape the humdrum of city life. The whole concept would be defeated, the letter reads.
The UT Administration has recently received a grant of Rs 2.73 crore from the Centre for the beautification of the Sukhna. The plans include illuminating the area, increasing parking space and landscaping near the regulator end.
