The Chandigarh vigilance department on Friday arrested Jagjit Kumar,work inspector,and Mohinder Pal,sweeper of the UT Engineering Department,for allegedly renting out houses meant for UT officials belonging to the Economically Weaker Sections in Sector 37. A case was registered on the complaint filed by residents of the locality.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Vigilance) Jal Dhari Meena said,Jagjit had been allotting vacant houses meant for officials under the EWS category on rent for amount ranging between Rs 1,200 and 2,000. Mohinder Pal had also allegedly connived with the accused.
DSP Meena added,A complaint was received in February,2012. After verifying the facts of the complaint,a case was registered on July 5,2012. On February 23,houses were raided by a team of the vigilance department and nine houses were found to be illegally occupied. However,the original documents of the houses allotted illegally were to be acquired. After we received the required documents on Thursday,Kumar and Pal were arrested.
EWS houses meant for allotment of UT officials were illegally occupied by some miscreants. The complaint read that the occupants of these houses used to create nuisance in the locality,thus causing inconvenience to residents.
Both the accused have caused financial loss to the government and have misused there official position, read the FIR.
The accused were produced in court on Friday and remanded in judicial custody.
Kumar is also facing a trial on charges of corruption,after he was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) while allegedly accepting an illegal gratification of Rs 15,000 to settle an issue pertaining to a notice issued to the complainant for subletting a government accommodation.
