The elections to the Panjab University Campus Students Council passed off peacefully on Friday,without any major incident of violence being reported from the campus,courtesy Chandigarh police. The campus was turned into a fortress with all three gates being closed between 10 am and 12 noon.
Heavy police presence marked the elections with nine Deputy Superintendents of Police and 20 Inspectors being on duty. A force of over 500 personnel was deployed. Besides,a bomb detection squad,teargas squad,riot control vehicle and quick action team were stationed on the campus.
All gates remained open for the entry of students till 10 am. No vehicles were allowed inside without thorough checking at the gates. We have never seen such security arrangements in the university before. The checking was stricter than previous years, said a third year UIET student.
Vice-Chancellor Arun K Grover made rounds of the university departments,monitoring the election process. There were 57 polling stations at various departments,including UIET. To monitor these booths,31 police posts were set up with one Inspector and five other police officers in each booth.
