(Representational Image) The Chandigarh administration Monday announced that the driving licences of residents will be cancelled and registration certificates of their vehicles suspended if they have five or more unpaid challans against their names.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Pradhuman Singh, In-Charge, Registering and Licensing Authority, Transport Department, said they took the decision as over 7.5 lakh challans have not been cleared.
“Traffic violations are the single-largest cause of road accidents and, over the past two to three years, Chandigarh has seen a sharp rise in unpaid traffic violations, which is a grave cause of concern calling for immediate attention,” he added.
“Despite multiple reminders and notices, a substantial number of drivers have neglected to pay fines for offences such as speeding, jumping red light, and dangerous driving. Therefore, it has been decided by the Chandigarh Administration that notice will be served to the violators having five or more unpaid challans to pay the compounding dues within 15 days, failing which their driving licence shall be cancelled and registration certificate will be suspended,” the official further said.
