When plants are attacked by small insects such as thrips, mites and jassids,it is difficult for amateur gardeners. With the years come experience about such insects and their effect on plants. But there are insects that are easily identifiable. If these are not controlled then the fault lies with the gardener. The insects that you see in the accompanying picture are bristle beetles. They are very beautiful to look at but voracious eaters and are normally seen feeding on shrubs. They have a special liking for the hibiscus. They eat the leaves and render the plant leafless. Spray rogor or confidor, dissolved at two ml to a litre of water,in case of infestation.

There are patches in my lawn as if it has burnt in places. What is the reason and how can I correct it? I have Korean grass in the lawn.

Sunita Sharma,Chandigarh

This is a common problem in Korean grass and occurs when you miss a mowing or two. There is a tuft formation in the grass and when the mowing is done, patches appear on the spots of tufts. Now that Monsoon is round the corner, new grass will appear and fill the patches. Do one deep mowing now.

At the time of flowering, three sprays of karathane and confidor are very important. One is at the time of panicle emergence, the second when the flowers are fully opened and the third is when the fruit is pea sized. For the spraying, dissolve karathane and confidor at one millilitre each to a litre of water.

The tips of my Ficus benjamina have dried and the new emerging leaves are showing ‘burning’ signs. What should I do to correct this?

Gursharan,Mohali

This is due to the summer heat and your plant must be exposed to sun. If it is in a pot, shift it for a few days to shade it till the rains start. The new leaves that emerge will be normal.

My three-year-old pine tree has dried up. What could be the reason and what should I do to revive it?

Manmohan,Panchkula

Basically the pine is a hill plant. It is certain that it got injured due to the summer heat, which this year was more intense than usual. Wait for some time and see if it grows new leaves after the rains start. Keep giving water. Check the soil for white ants too and exterminate them in case of infestation.
