Elections for nagar panchayats and municipal committees in the four districts of Doaba region were largely peaceful on Thursday,with around 80 per cent polling being recorded in both. While general elections were held for nagar panchayats,byelections were held for municipal committees (MC) in the state on Thursday.
The maximum polling was recorded in Ward 4 of the Sultanput Lodhi MC byelection,where 89.26 per cent polling was recoded while the lowest polling was recorded at ward number 8 of the Shahkot Nagar panchayat elections,where only 50.4 per cent polling was recorded.
In Jalandhar,two out of three nagar panchyats including Bhogpur and Goraya witnessed 83.24 per cent and 80 per cent polling respectively. In the Shahkot Nagar Panchayat elections,the two wards that went to polls,Wards 8 and 9,recorded 50.4 per cent and 63.7 per cent polling respectively.
In the remaining 11 wards,SAD leaders have been elected after Congress candidates withdrew their nomination papers.
In Jalandhars municipal committee byelections,ward 1 in Nakodkar and ward 2 in Phillaur,recorded 80.23 and 76 per cent polling respectively.
In Nawanshahr district,Balachaur Nagar Panchyat witnessed 85 per cent polling and in two wards of Bangas MC byelections,78.56 per cent polling was recorded.
In Hoshiarpur district,82 per cent of the electorate exercised their franchise in the Mahilpur Nagar Panchayat election,while Gardhiwal MC byelections witnessed 82 per cent polling.
In Kapurthalas three nagar panchyats of Begowal,Bholath,Dhilwan,polling was recorded at 79.42 per cent,81.68 per cent and 76.85 per cent respectively.
In Kapurthalas ward number 17,the Municipal Committee bye-elections saw 77.35 per cent polling.
