A protest against the Waqf (Amendment) Act will be held in Punjab’s Mohali on Friday following a decision taken at a district-level meeting of representatives of the Muslim community.

“We appeal to all political parties, religious and secular organisations that stand against Manuwadi ideology and promote communal harmony to support us in this struggle. The Government of India must not mistake our patience for weakness. If this unjust decision is forcibly imposed, the central government must be ready to face the consequences,” a joint statement issued after the meeting held on Wednesday evening said.

Copies of the Act will be burnt in front of the deputy commissioner’s office as part of the protests.

The primary agenda of the meeting held at Kumbra village in Mohali’s Sector 68 was to deliberate on launching a large-scale protest against the Waqf (Amendment) Act that came into force this week.

The gathering witnessed active participation from key district office-bearers, management committees of various mosques, eidgahs, dargahs, and representatives from several political parties.

A five-member committee led by Dr Anwar Hussain Saneta and including Sudagar Khan (Mataur), Swarrati Khan (Bhagomajra), Abdullah Khan (Kumbra), Sheikh Wasim Saneta, and Khalil Khan (Sukhgarh) was set up to coordinate the protests.

A formal appeal will also be made to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, urging him not to implement the Act in the state as has already been done by the chief ministers of Jharkhand and West Bengal, Hemant Soren and Mamata Banerjee, respectively. It was also unanimously decided that a memorandum addressed to the President would be submitted via the deputy commissioner, demanding the repeal of the amendment.
